USB-IF Association previously released on the Type-C standard engineering change notice (Type-C Spec ECN), the USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification R2.2 specification to make updates to the content of the future of the USB cable, connector and device forensics related to content, including adjustments to the cable The update to the USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification R2.2 covers the future of USB cables, connectors and device certification, including adjusting cable sizes and opening up USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C legacy cable certification.
What are the changes that deserve the attention of the connector industry?
In particular, the USB-IF is still using version 2.1b of the cable connector certification test specification (Universal Serial Bus Type-C Connectors and Cable Assemblies Compliance Document Revision 2.1b/2021). The following updates are expected to be implemented when the next version of the certification test specification is issued.
Cable Standards
Firstly, the USB Type-C cable plug dimensions have been updated to adjust the cable outer moulding width. The width of the outer mould of the cable has been updated from a maximum of 12.35mm to a maximum of 12.85mm; in addition, the thickness of the outer mould of the cable has been adjusted, and the width of the outer mould of the cable has been updated from a maximum of 6.5mm to a maximum of 7.0mm; at the same time, the spacing requirements for multiple USB Type-C connectors have also been adjusted, and the lateral distance between adjacent connectors has been updated from a minimum of 12.85mm to a minimum of 13.35 mm Vertical distance between adjacent connectors from a minimum of 7mm updated to a minimum of 7.50mm.
Secondly, the content also updates the cable certification standard, opening up USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C legacy cable certification. The previous specification stipulates that the USB 3.1 Type-C legacy cable only allows Gen2 type cable certification, this standard update will allow Gen1 type cable certification, the new opening of the two cable types for the USB 3.1 Gen1 Standard-A to Type-C cable and USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C to Micro-B cable, the USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C to Micro-B cable. The cables support 5Gbps transmission rates and can be up to 2m in length.
