What are the environmental performance of connectors?

Introduction to the environmental performance of connectors
Oct 30th,2024 728 Views
Connectors will encounter different environmental conditions during use. Confirm the electrical characteristics or mechanical characteristics under different usage environments to ensure the functions of the connector in different usage environments. The environmental characteristics of the connector are as follows:

1. Mechanical Shock
  • Purpose: To determine the ability of an electrical connector to withstand the impact it may encounter when separated and dropped to the ground. This test is only applicable to electrical connectors designed to meet this requirement.
  • Test method: EIA-364-27 or MIL-STD-1344A,2004
  • Test points: a. Shock pulse: half-sine or sawtooth (the acceleration peaks of the two are different)
b. The sample is fully wired and mated, and loaded with load: 100mA Max.
c. Three times in each of the six directions on three mutually perpendicular planes, a total of 18 times
d. Generally used pulses have a peak acceleration of 30Gs and a period of 11ms.
  • Specification requirements: a. no discontinuities of one microsecond (no instantaneous interruption) Physical impact is to simulate the situation of consumers using products under accelerated motion loads to ensure the connection function of products under different acceleration environments.
2. Random Vibration
  • Purpose: To determine the impact of vibration that an electrical connector may encounter in the main frequency band or random vibration frequency band and its amplitude during its life, and to confirm the function of the connector when it encounters vibration during use. Random vibration simulates the situation of consumers using products under vibration conditions (such as using products in a moving car) to ensure the connection function of products under different vibration environments.
  • Test method: EIA-364-28 or MIL-STD-1344A,2005
  • Test points: a. Sample placement method; samples need to be full ass'y or install (simulated usage conditions)
b. Vibration parameters: acceleration = m/s2, amplitude =; frequency conversion amplitude & time & mode; duration, all need to be determined;
c. The sample is loaded with load: 100 mA Max.
  • Specification requirements: a. no discontinuities of one microsecond (no instantaneous interruption)
b. other dimensional, and functional inspection (other dimensional and functional inspection)
3. Impact
  • Purpose: To ensure the connector's ability to resist collision. To ensure the function of the system in case of accidental landing and other collisions.
  • Test method: EIA-364-42
  • Test points: a. Concrete floor, H= Min.
b. Height and frequency (related to product requirement level)
c. Falling direction
  • Specification requirements: Failure type
a. Loss of sealing
b. Loss of electrical function
c. Loss of mechanical properties (male and female fit; part structure)

Crash testing is a simulation of a product being subjected to an accidental collision. Ensure the connection function of the connector when it is subjected to accidental impact such as falling to the ground.
