What is SMA RF Connector?

Introducing SMA RF Connectors
Nov 11th,2024 804 Views
SMA connector stands for SubMiniature Version A, which is suitable for applications in the microwave field with a frequency range from DC to 26.5GHz (typically 18GHz), such as connecting RF cables or microstrip lines in the RF circuit of microwave equipment and digital communication systems. Applications include telecommunications, networks, wireless communications, and detection and measurement instruments. The external shape is generally hexagonal, and it has the characteristics of wide frequency band, excellent performance, high reliability, and long life.
SMA was designed by Bendix and Omni-Spectra as an OSM connector in the late 1950s. It was one of the most commonly used RF/microwave connectors at the time and was filled with polytetrafluoroethylene. Under the conditions at the time, SMA connectors quickly became popular due to their small size and ability to operate at higher frequencies (the frequency range for semi-rigid cables is DC to 18GHz; the frequency range for flexible cables is DC to 12.4GHz). The millimeter wave connectors (such as 3.5mm and 2.92mm) that were developed later also considered mechanical compatibility issues.

Structural part naming:  j usually represents a pin (male), K represents a jack (female); characteristic impedance: 50 ohms are marked with 50 or not, 75 ohms are marked with 75; shell type: straight: not marked, bent: W; installation form: flange: F, nut: Y, welding: H; wiring type: cable representative number: microstrip: D, semi-steel: B, high-frequency line: not marked.
Among them, the "SMA-JK" connector is a common SMA male to female straight connector, which can convert the male connector to a female connector and is used in many RF devices. RF connector adapter model naming and composition example: "SMA-JK" means: SMA model 50 ohm series adapter, one end is a pin J (male), and the other end is a jack K (female).

The main features of SMA RF connectors include: wide frequency band, miniaturized design, high-frequency transmission capability, high-precision connection, strong durability and long life. The frequency range of SMA connectors usually supports from direct current (DC) to 18GHz or higher, depending on the manufacturing quality and materials, and is suitable for RF connections in electronic systems with frequencies up to 18 GHz or even higher. This connector has a variety of styles, such as male, female, straight, right angle, bulkhead accessories, etc., which can meet most connection needs.
